When investigating a sewer smell there can be some obvious Things that you can check first. Here are a list of things that I personally check to find a sewer smell.
Check if there are any air admittance valves( also known as Studor vents) that may have gone bad and need replacing.
Check the building for any dried out P-Traps.
Check all toilets, by trying to move the base. If they base moves at all. The toilet may need to be reset and wax ring changed out.
Check all pipes for age and signs of damage.
And if all of these don't solve your problem you may have to resort to a smoke test. In which the sewer system is flooded with smoke and then check if the smoke is leaking out anywhere.
